In Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, Bar (בַּר) translates to “son” (בֵּן), while bat (בַּת) means “daughter” and mitzvah (מִצְוָה) means “commandment”. Thus bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah literally translate to “son of commandment” and “daughter of commandment”.
Jewish tweens (age 12 for girls) and teens (13 for boys) are expected to be Bat and Bar Mitzvahed to acknowledge the fact they achieved the age when they are obliged to observe the commandments. In Jewish Law, children who have not achieved adulthood are expected to be under their parent’s guidance and not held responsible for their actions. The bat and bar mitzvah ceremonies publicly announces that these young people are able to when a minimum number of people are needed to perform a religious ceremony (a minyan), to form binding contracts, to testify before religious courts and to marry.
Though boys and girls automatically become bat and bar mitzvah when they achieve 12 & 13 years of age respectively, many Jewish families prefer to mark the day with a ceremony and a celebration.
As early as a century ago, Bat and Bar Mitzvah celebrations were unheard of – instead the celebrant recognizes her or his first Aliyah by reciting a blessing during a Shabbat service following her or his birthday. But modern day practice is for the celebrant to learn recite the haftarah portion inclusive of its traditional chant, and to make a speech which traditionally begins with “Today I am a wo/man…”
This service is usually followed by a large reception at a catering hall or restaurant.
Staten Island is home to a large Jewish community – as such, Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations take place every week. When planning your Bar Mitzvah ceremony on Staten Island, it is important that you choose a catering hall that can be transformed into your vision to celebrate this holy day for your child.
So many Staten Island catering halls are ornately decorated in a way that might not be reflective of your bar mitzvah celebrant’s taste. Those Staten Island catering halls that are more subdued, are often times dark and worn looking.
